Golden Decade Honours to be given at IIFA 2009

IIFA Academy in its tenth year has decided to institute a special set of Awards to commemorate the last decade of Indian Cinema. Therefore, celebrating the best of the best, it has put together nominations in five major categories for The Videocon IIFA Golden Decade Honours which will be announced at the IDEA IIFA Awards on the 13th of June, in Macau. The five categories are Star of the Decade – Male, Star of the Decade – Female, Movie of the Decade, Director of the Decade and Music of the Decade.

The nominations for the same are as follows -

Star of the decade – Male: Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan.

Star of the decade – Female: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra.

Movie of the decade: Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam – 2000; Kaho Na Pyaar Hai – 2001; Lagaan – 2002; Devdas – 2003; Kal Ho Na Ho – 2004; Veer Zaara – 2005; Black – 2006; Chak De India – 2008 and Rang De Basanti – 2007

In pictures: International Indian Film Awards 2007

Geeta Basra was one of the stars who stopped to pose on the green carpet. Organisers chose green instead of red for the carpet to highlight global warming.


Presenter Boman Irani paid tribute to the UK by wearing different British outfits through the night, including this kilt, a James Bond outfit and even a Beefeater costume.


All the winners on the night were voted for by Bollywood fans from a short list chosen by Bollywood film experts.


Shilpa Shetty won a special award for the way she handled the Celebrity Big Brother racism row...


And Bobby Deol was so proud to see his dad Dharmendra Deol (second left) win a lifetime achievement award that he burst into tears on stage!


... before taking to the stage with choreographer Shymak Davar to perform a medley of Bollywood hits.


Father and son team Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan delighted the audience with their performance.


Hrithik Roshan had a great night. He won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of a superhero in Krrish, which is Hindi for There's No one Like You, and also got the prize for most glamorous male.


She was back on stage with her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, to present the award for best film, which was won by Rang De Basanti, or Paint It Yellow.


Aishwarya Rai looked like she was walking on air after winning the most glamorous female award.

iifa 2007 Rocks in Yorkshire

The 8th annual Iifa awards saw brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan take a train ride with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai to the grand IIFA 2007 event. Amitabh Bachchan and Shilpa Shetty opened the event inside Leeds Town Hall where brand ambassador Amitabh was given a special gift of a blue blazer with the words Yorkshire all over it. At the 8th annual Iifa opening Amitabh said “Iifa is really a celebration of Indian cinema beyond Indian shores and we are very happy to be here in Yorkshire.” The newly wed couple, Ash-Abhi took a train from London to the countryside for the event. Abhishek said “The train journey was good. We are looking forward to Iifa and to put up a good show.” Ash an Abhi had earlier gone to watch the French Open Tennis match as the official sponsor for the event was a watch brand that Ash endorses. The couple looked extremely happy and comfortable by each other’s side. They smiled, preened and posed for a few pictures too. Abhishek’s sister Shweta Nanda also accompanied the couple. Abhishek is all set to perform at the Iifa Awards ceremony this year; however Ash will only be cheering him on and not joining him on stage. Others who are all set to perform at the Iifa award ceremony are actors Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi etc.

A number of films were promoted at the Iifa this year like Salman Khan’s Partner and his international film Marigold, Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol’s film Apne amongst others. The premiere of the film ‘The Train’ in Castleford in England was well attended by celebs like Salman Khan, Upen Patel, Emraan Hashmi, Geeta Basra, Sayali Bhaghat etc. Actress Shilpa Shetty who has carved a special place for herself in the UK after her victory in reality show Big Brother also brought in her birthday which coincided with the event. A party was held for her by the Iifa organizers.

Amitabh Bachchan also announced his world concert with son Abhi and daughter-in-law Ash titled ‘Unforgettable’. Amitabh, Ash, Abhi, Lara Dutta and Bipasha Basu were present to announce their plans for the world concert. At the event Ash said “I am looking forward to working with my father-in-law.” All three Bachchans looked like one big happy family. The highlight of the second day at the Iifa event was a charity cricket match played between bollywood celebs and a Yorkshire cricket team at Headingley cricket grounds in Leeds. Actors who participated in the cricket match included Saif Ali Khan, Upen Patel, Govinda, Arjun Rampal, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Apoorva Lakhia, Kapil Dev, Mohammed Azharuddin etc while the Bachchan family including Amitabh, Ash, Abhi and Shweta cheered from the stands. Actor Salman Khan too was present but seemed keen to avoid the newly wed couple Ash-Abhi and hence was spotted making rounds of the grounds. Bipasha Basu also attended the event and cheered along. The event was won by the Indian team and there was a lot of fun, joy and cheer at the event. The award ceremony was the grand finale at the Iifa event. The awards night was compared by the witty Lara Dutta and funny man Boman Irani.

The Iifa award ceremony began with a descent of bollywood stars on a green carpet to show their support for environmental issues at Sheffield Hallam FM Arena. The event was spectacular and witnessed several dance performances by bollywood celebs. Shilpa Shetty’s dance number was cheered on by the crowds as she gyrated to ‘Crazy kiya re’ and other numbers. Akshay Kumar too jigged to some Punjabi numbers. Amitabh-Abhishek also performed on-stage. Hindi film ‘Rang De Basanti’ bagged the most awards such as Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Editor etc. However Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ also bagged quite a few awards like Best Director, Best Story etc. Hrithik Roshan bagged the Best Actor Award for his superhero performance in Krrish; Rani Mukherjee won the Best Actress Award for her performance in Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna. Soha Ali Khan won Best Supporting actress for Rang De Basanti, Arshad Warsi won Best supporting actor for Lage Raho Munnabhai, Tusshar Kapoor won Best actor in a Comic role for Golmaal, Saif Ali Khan won Best Actor in a negative role for Omkara. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai won Glamour Star of the Year awards and Deepa Mehta; NRI director won an award for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Amitabh also presented veteran actor Dharmendra with an award for his outstanding contribution to Indian Cinema, it was an emotional moment for both Amitabh and Dharmendra who relived a few of their old memories. Yash Chopra, Amitabh Bachchan and Shabana Azmi were honoured with doctorates for their contribution to Indian Cinema. On the whole the awards night was a star studded event that saw a lot razzle and dazzle.

'Rang De Basanti & Lage Raho Munna Bhai Sweeps IIFA Awards

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's runaway blockbuster 'Rang De Basanti' pipped 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' to win the Best Film award at the star-studded Idea IIFA Awards ceremony here Saturday night that showcased the extravaganza, glitz and glamour of the Indian film industry.

Apart from the over 10,000 people present at the state-of-the-art Sheffield Hallam FM Arena, the show will be watched by millions when it is telecast on Star later this month. The audience was treated to four hours of non-stop entertainment involving the biggest names in the Mumbai-based industry, also known as Bollywood.

'Rang De Basanti' won five awards, just one more than the hugely popular 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', which finished a close second.

Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani was awarded the Best Director for 'Lage Raho...', the Best Actor award went to Hrithik Roshan for his powerful portrayal of a superhero in 'Krrish' and Rani Mukherji was the Best Actress for her intense acting in 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna'.

Soha Ali Khan bagged the Best Supporting Actress award for her subdued yet composed acting in 'Rang De...', while Arshad Warsi lifted the Best Supporting Actor's trophy for his rib-tickling performance in 'Lage Raho...'.

Tusshar Kapoor received the award of Best Actor in a Comic Role for his antics as a dumb man in 'Golmaal' and Saif Ali Khan won the Best Actor in a Negative Role for his brilliant performance in 'Omkara', Bollywood's adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Othello', where his character of an ambitious and scheming man earned him rave reviews.

Bachchan 'bahu' Aishwarya and Hrithik Roshan were chosen for the Glamour Stars of the year awards. Director Rakesh Roshan was given the Creative Person of the year award, while Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta was honoured for her contribution to Indian films outside India.

Cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott honoured Shilpa Shetty on behalf of local authorities for her poise on the British reality television show 'Celebrity Big Brother', which she won in January.

Hirani and Abhijit Joshi won the Best Dialogue award for 'Lage Raho...' and Hirani tasted success again as he pipped others to win the Best Story award for the same film, while Renzil D'Silva and Mehra bagged the Best Screenplay for 'Rang De...'.

'Omkara', 'Dhoom:2' and 'Fanaa' won two awards each at the event, which witnessed sizzling dance performances by superstars Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar, sultry Bipasha Basu and other Bollywood stars like Emraan Hashmi and Aaftab Shivdasani.

But the performances of the night came from the 32-year-old Shilpa Shetty, who was cheered on by the people as she danced to the tunes of the hit songs 'Crazy Kiya Re...' and 'Main Sadke Jawan...'.

Akshay Kumar later brought the house down with his energetic performance to Punjabi numbers such as 'Rabba, rabba' and 'Aja mahi'. Amitabh and his son Abhishek also drew sustained applause as they danced to popular tunes.

Upen Patel and Kangana Ranaut were declared the best debutants of last year. The Best Editor award went to P.S. Bharti for 'Rang De Basanti', J.A. James won Best Make-up for 'Dhoom:2' and Anaita Shroff Adajania bagged the Best Costume award for her stylish innovations with outfits in the same film.

Sunidhi Chauhan received the Best Female Singer award for her hit song 'Beedi Jalaile...' from the film 'Omkara' while Shaan was the Best Male Singer for 'Chand Sifarish...' from the film 'Fanaa'.

The Best Lyricist award went to Prasoon Joshi for penning the song 'Chand Sifarish...' from 'Fanaa' and A.R. Rahman won the Best Music award for his soulful melodies in 'Rang De Basanti'.

The elaborate set decoration, mega decibel music, lavish use of lights and colours and presence of the top names of Indian film industry - Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, Aishwarya, Yash Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta - made the event a spectacle for the audience.

Versatile character-actor Boman Irani and svelte Lara Dutta hosted this year's IIFA awards, which marked the end of the IIFA Weekend that brought top names of the Indian celluloid to the region.

IIFA rolled out a 'Green Carpet' this year, deviating from the tradition of a 'Red Carpet' welcome to celebrities, as it had taken up environmental issues in a bid to save the planet.
