Naseeruddin Shah started YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA on July 20 last year. And the film, which marks Shah’s debut as director, releases on July 20 this year. “I hope it proves to be an auspicious date,” the actor turned director jokes. Shah says that he has known Shabbir Boxwala, the producer of YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA, for almost two decades. “He was an apprentice to Rajiv Rai, when I met him first. The friendship only strengthened with the passage of time and Shabbir and I decided to make a film. In fact, we were toying with the idea of making a film for almost three years, but it didn’t work out for some reason or the other,” Shah reveals. So how did YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA happen? “Uttam Gada gave the script to us. When both Shabbir and I read it, we jumped in the fray instantly,” he adds. The cast includes some amazing talent: Paresh Rawal, Irrfan Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ayesha Takia and choreographer Saroj Khan. “I couldn’t think of anyone else for the role of Irrfan’s mother. In the film, no one knows what this woman does, but she knows how to get things done. Also, Saroj has that tough look, like this character in the film,” Naseer defends his choice. YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA tells four stories in those two hours. “But all the stories are independent. None of them are connected with each other. But one stroke can alter destinies, shatter lives and affect generations,” Shah states, denying that the film is based on the 9/11 incident, “I wouldn’t like to reveal anything except that YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA is based on a real-life incident.”
