IIFA raised the curtain on its second decade of celebrations in Colombo in a 3 day IIFA Weekend from June 3 to June 5 in the bustling heart of Sri Lanka. The 3 day extravaganza plays host to the Indian film industry, the corporate world, dignitaries from India and the region, world media and Indian Cinema fans from across the globe.

The IIFA Weekend, will be shown across the Middle East starting July 4th exclusively on Star Plus. The 3 day IIFA Weekend has been carefully divided into a 3 week extravaganza for its Middle East audiences. The IIFA Curtain raiser will telecast on July 4 at 10 pm followed by the IIFA Weekend with the Stars on 10th July at 4.30 pm. The ultimate in glitz, glamour & stars , the IIFA Awards will be televised on July 18 starting 6.30 pm.

With IIFA into its second decade of celebrations the Awards night was hosted by the talented trio of Boman Irani, Riteish Deshmukh and Lara Dutta and was doused in a series of honours, entertainment and laughs. The show opened with Lanka’s maiden child, Jacqueline Fernandez depicting her Sri Lankan roots with finesse in her scintillating performance, accompanied by a class act from the country’s best.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor sizzled to hit numbers from 2009 films including Love Aaj Kal and 3 Idiots, respectively while Indian Cinema greats, Salman Khan, Govinda and Anil Kapoor quite literally took us back, showcasing their trademark dance moves from their most prominent films, to a stadium full of enthralled and hooting fans in Sri Lanka.

One of the most talked about sequences came from the unsuspecting, Boman Irani who brought his musical forte to the fore, surprising everyone as he strummed the guitar, singing “Give me some sunshine”! Catch all the excitement as Bipasha Basu rode in onto the IIFA stage on a motorbike and the boy next door, Vivek Oberoi captivated the crowd with his spellbinding performance and even taking away a special trophy.

The night ended on a high with many hearts aflutter as Indian Cinema’s favourite dancer, Hrithik Roshan took centre stage with an act that involved swords and a constant changing of looks and even had the nation’s heartthrob singing.

IIFA has grown bigger and better through the years, and its entry into the second decade of IIFA Magic, celebrated with the many events during the IIFA Weekend in Colombo, was proof to its escalating global reach. A cinema production team arrived in the island early today to shoot the first Bollywood blockbuster film in Sri Lanka and this comes following the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy or the IIFA awards 2010 held in Sri Lanka.

According to reports shooting for the film titled “Ready” will take place at locations in Colombo and Bentota and the artistes taking part will stay in the island on a 40-day schedule.

Speaking to Newsfirst the Managing Director of the Tourism Promotion Bureau Dilip Madadeniya said that many famous Indian actors and actresses including Salman Khan are scheduled to arrive in the country in the next few days.

Salman Khan is famous for not avoiding touchy issues and is known to call a spade a spade. He may have upset the Tamil Film Producers’ Council by attending the recently held IIFA, but that is not going to stop him from stating what he thinks. His comment, “Everyone belonging to the film industry should have attended IIFA. They should have come together to extend their help to the Sri Lankans” is, however, said to have angered quite a few folks in Bollywood. But, irrespective of who is angry with him, there is no denying that this IIFA was ALL about Salman. He ensured that nobody missed the Bachchans! He was literally everywhere – on the ramp, winning awards, planting trees, meeting kids, having coffee with Jacqueline, ignoring Vivek Oberoi and so on…

Amitabh Bachchan is the founder-ambassador of IIFA and has always played an important role in the B’wood Oscars. He’s made his presence felt at every IIFA Weekend, from Amsterdam to Dubai. But this year Amitabh chose to give the awards at Colombo a miss. Son and bahu also did not make an appearance, with plenty of ‘professional’ excuses being offered. Here’s why we think Big B should be dumped as IIFA ambassador:

1. Big B chose to go off and shoot a tourism commercial at Gujarat’s Gir forest at exactly the same time

2. During the IIFA weekend, Bachchan blogged about everything on earth except why he did not go to Colombo. But he owes an explanation to his fans, especially Sri Lankan fans.

3. True, the Bachchans add a whole lot of glamour to the event, but this year the awards continued to

shine. Stunning Kareena, Lara and Bipasha ensured we did not miss the Bachchan bahu.

4. With younger stars like Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan taking an active interest in IIFA, may be it’s time to change the ambassador altogether. Choose someone who appeals to the younger B’wood fan…

5. IIFA was often seen as a Bachchan family extravaganza, with all the Bachchans walking the green carpet and at least one winning an award or performing on stage. This year, many others came into the limelight, including Vivek Oberoi!

Indian actor Salman Khan will be shooting a movie in Sri Lanka, Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

The actor who arrived in Sri Lanka for the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) has cancelled the shooting of his new movie in India titled Mursi and will begin shooting a movie in Sri Lanka next month.

Khan, who is the brand ambassador of the IIFA Charity Initiative, is active in supporting those who have been affected and displaced by the war in Sri Lanka.

Abeywardena also added that Khan had discussed this venture with the government and has been given the green light for his activities.

Big B was missed a lot at IIFA: Jacqueline Fernandez

Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez, who played the host at this year's IIFA said that brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, who skipped the event, was missed immensely by the film fraternity.

"Absolutely, we really missed him this year. We were really hoping to see him because we are all such big fans. But I am sure he had his reasons for not being there which is understandable. I am sure he'll make it to Sri Lanka this year or once again," Jacqueline said.

The 67-year-old megastar had skipped the IIFA weekend held in Colombo amidst protests from the Tamils in India and the southern film industry.

"Despite all the fuss we had a good turnout this year and lot of stars attended like Salman Khan, Bipasha Basu, Kareena Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt," said Jacqueline who was in the capital to attend the US Asia Business Forum.

The former Miss Sri Lanka admits she was elated to perform at the event, where she also bagged the best Debutante award for Aladin. "I was very happy to be nominated. They called my name and I was in shock. It was an award I was able to win in my country with my own people cheering for me. My performance was traditional and I was nervous since it was the opening performance and in front of the whole film fraternity. But a lot of people appreciated it," she said.

Jacqueline, who has shared screen space with Riteish Deshmukh in her two films till date and in the item number she did in 'Housefull', however kept mum on her relationship status. "There will always be rumours, it's something you need to know and prepare for even before you enter the industry. Riteish has been a wonderful co-star. He never helped me in

dialogues but he has taught me a bit of Marathi," she said.

The 26-year-old beauty, was also full of praise for actor Salman Khan who joined hands for the 'Habitat for Humanity' project in Lanka to adopt and rebuild a village for refugees. "We were so delighted to have Salman with us to support the cause and really thank him for being there for helping build houses."

Open to all kind of roles, she would love to star opposite any of the three 'Khans' in the future."I would like to work with any Khan, I am not fussy about it. I also want to act with younger actors like Imran, Neil as they are of my age so it would be fun."

“I am learning Hindi and fascinated by it. Five years down the line I do see myself in India because I am enjoying it here and feel at home. Everyone has been fantastic and I don't think about competition as everyone has their own space," she added.

Abhishek defends skipping IIFA 2010 in Sri Lanka

Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan, who missed the 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) event in Sri Lanka, defended his absence from the gala due to work commitments.

"I didn't skip the IIFA awards. I have been shooting in Istanbul for one of my films called 'Game' so unfortunately I couldn't attend it,"

Many Bollywood stars skipped IIFA this year including its brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan as well as superstar Shah Rukh Khan and according to reports, they gave it a miss following a boycott call from the south Indian film industry.

A statement issued by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce had said that southern stars and filmmakers would boycott all Bollywood stars who attend the IIFA in Colombo from June 3-5.

They have been campaigning against the island government and the alleged killing of civilian Tamils during the conflict between Sri Lankan army and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Releasing June 18, "Raavan" is a bilingual and has been directed by Mani Ratnam. Co-produced by Reliance Big Pictures and Madras Talkies, the movie also stars Aishwarya Rai and Tamil superstar Vikram, who makes his Bollywood debut with the movie. (Times of India)

Bipasha Basu befriends Salman Khan!

Things can take a fresh start anytime; it just depends on your attitude how to go about it. IIFA Awards 2010 was a perfect venue for the actress Bipasha Basu to mend fences. Not only did she become friendly with Kareena Kapoor, she initiated a talk with Salman Khan too, thereby ending the chill of many years.

At a party thrown by him during IIFA, Salman was enjoying with his Bollywood friends. To everyone’s surprise, Bipasha walked in the party, and later went up to Salman and thanked him for the party and the wonderful time she had there. That simple gesture mellowed Salman down. So the next day when she attended the party again, Salman was ‘warm’ towards her.

Bipasha doesn’t deny the news but refuses to call it a ‘patch-up’ because, according to her, she never had any issues with Salman, even though everyone in the industry knows that Salman’s cold war with John Abraham affected his equation with Bips too.

Actor Vivek Oberoi, who extended his IIFA trip here to help in the rehabilitation in Sri Lanka's war-ravaged areas, says the presence of Bollywood stars has helped country's image as a safe destination.

The country is keen to repair an image battered by the civil war that lasted for close to three decades.

The government rolled out red carpet to Bollywood stars for the India International Academy Awards (IIFA) gala but big names like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan boycotted the event over protests by Tamil bodies in India.

However, Oberoi said the presence of Bollywood stars will help spread the goodwill.

"You have had many global celebrities come down to Sri Lanka on one platform and endorse your nation and enhance your brand value. These are things that are immeasurable in terms of value. So many fans across the globe suddenly wake up and say wow my favourite star. He went to Sri Lanka. Vivek Oberoi went there with his family. That means it is safe," Oberoi told reporters.

Oberoi visited Sri Lanka's former war-ravaged Vavuniya city and other areas in the district to begin a rehabilitation project there. He, along with his parents, travelled to Vavuniya by air and was accompanied by Abeywardena.

The Company actor held discussions with the District Secretary of Vavuniya, NGOs and the displaced and resettled civilians.

Later he visited resettled people in Nedunkerni in Vavuniya district. The actor is reportedly planning to build a school there with the help of local and Bollywood artistes.

Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywarden said the award show had generated a lot of good will for Sri Lanka.

"As many as 610 million people in 110 countries will watch the IIFA award ceremony on July 4. Our target is to increase the number of (global) tourists by 50 per cent by 2012. We will achieve our target," Yapa said.

"In the end it is not a question of who arrived or not. What is important is the message that was sent to the world stating there is a conducive atmosphere in Sri Lanka for such an event to be held and anyone could visit the country and spend a holiday in a peaceful atmosphere," the minister added.

Hrithik Roshan’s dad: Hailing Money in Sri Lanka!

So what if the flick ‘Kites’ had to bite the dust in many a places, and so what if the screening of the flick could not take place as scheduled in Colombo, Sri Lanka ? This has not deterred the spirits of the Roshans at all.

The most amazing part of the dark days for the Roshan family was that it did have its silver lining drawn well and strong. Well, this is in accordance to the fact that Rakesh Roshan, Hrithik Roshan’s dad, the filmmaker of ‘Kites’ was in Colombo to attend the IIFA celebrations there from the 3-5 June.

Now, it so happened that Rakesh Roshan wanted to taste the sweetness of the money making magic in the casinos of the island nation. So, one night, he went off to the MGM nightclub in a place called Kollipitiya.

Most amazingly, the filmmaker stared minting money on the slot machine like it was hailing money for the B- town producer only. Reportedly, the producer earned about Rs. 98 lakh in Sri Lankan currency!

Everyone who was at the venue was quite amazed at the luck that the star producer had brought with him.

Rakesh Roshan was so much involved in the gaming glitz that he refused to leave the casino until the wee hours of the next morning. It was well past 4am.when he finally left with a big fat pocket!

Well, we wonder if the luck came from his movie, where the mafia gang leader, played Kabir Bedi is shown to be the owner of casinos in Las Vegas, or was it just a stroke of good luck after the bad luck shown to him by ‘Kites’.

Nevertheless, at the end of it all, it did hail money for Hrithik’s dad!

Vivek Oberoi praises Lanka’s post-LTTE efforts to restore normalcy

Praising Sri Lanka for making a genuine effort to help the war displaced people re-build their lives in a post-LTTE era, Bollywood superstar Vivek Oberoi says the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony would enhance Sri Lanka’s image overseas.

Addressing the media yesterday, after visiting Nedunkerni, east of the Kandy-Jaffna A9 road, a smiling Oberoi asserted that nothing could be as positive as the mega event to dispel hostile media coverage of the country, though the war ended last year.

He emphasised that bringing a large number of prominent Indian artistes on one stage was nothing but a tremendous achievement amid an organized bid to discourage the organizers.

Oberoi is the first Indian movie star allowed to tour the former battlefields. Oberoi said that some of his friends and associates had discouraged him from visiting Sri Lanka, particularly the Northern region as local officials were sure to deceive him. But they explained the actual situation and the difficulties faced by them in restoring civilian life in the once war-devastated region, Oberoi said, appreciating the ongoing rehabilitation, reconstruction and resettlement programme.

Commenting on the difficulties experienced by public servants, civilians, particularly the student community, he said that travelling by road was difficult. The overland ride from Vavuniya to Nedunkerni had not been easy due to the poor condition of the roads network, he said. But those who live there had to endure that suffering every day, he said, while reiterating his commitment to help Sri Lankan Tamils.

The outspoken actor dismissed the notion that the Indian film fraternity should have boycotted IIFA awards ceremony in Colombo to pressure the Sri Lankan government. He said that would not have made any difference, but by visiting Colombo, they could bring relief to those who really needed assistance.

He explained the difficult environment in which children displaced by the war as well as former members of the LTTE study. While acknowledging Sri Lanka’s efforts to improve the infrastructure, he said that the school, which he visited on Monday, did not have a roof. "Students studied under a tree," he said, commending the students for what he called a wonderful welcome accorded to him. He assured that action would be taken to provide them with new school buildings and help set up facilities necessary to accommodate about 1,000 students.

Commenting on efforts to dissuade him from taking part in the event in Colombo, Oberoi said that he would not give in to intimidation and threats. Before the event all asked why we wanted to have IIFA in Sri Lanka, but today no one would raise that question, he said.

Sri Lanka Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today that Sri Lanka would achieve massive publicity when IIFA 2010 telecasts internationally.

Addressing a post-IIFA review press briefing, the Minister said that IIFA will be telecast on July 04 in 110 television channels worldwide. The programme will be viewed by 600 million people, the Minister pointed out.

Publicity slogans of Sri Lanka will be aired regularly throughout the programme, Minister Abeywardena said.

The promotion gained by Sri Lanka through this programme cannot be achieved without a massive expense, the Minister explained.

The Minister blamed the opposition for sharing the happiness of the pro-Tamil Tiger lobby as several Bollywood stars did not participate in the IIFA due to pressure.

Riteish Deshmukh, who is known to play pranks, embarrassed Neil Nitin Mukesh when he showed his semi-nude picture from the movie 'Jail' and asked why he was exposing so much.

An embarrassed Neil said: "The director of the movie wanted me to do this and hence I did it."

But Riteish wasn't done with pulling Neil's leg and said: "Abhi aisa kar rahein ho to aage kya karoge?'(When you are doing such stuff right now, what will you do in future?)

IIFA 2010: Behind the scenes

Aamir Khan's '3 Idiots' swept the 11th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards that concluded with much fanfare in Colombo early on June 6 but the three-day event will perhaps be remembered more for the absence of Bollywood mega stars led by IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan, apparently due to a boycott threatened by southern Indian film distributors of the stars who attended the event.

There was nothing official about the absence of the Bachchans, including Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, as also Shah Rukh Khan, who had previously announced he would be at Colombo, but it was quite clear that Bollywood was taking the boycott threat seriously.

It's not that the southern Indian distributors are opposed per se to the event going out of India - it has previously been held in cities like Macau, Bangkok and Amsterdam - but they were specifically opposed to Colombo as the venue because of what they perceived to be the excesses by the Sri Lanka armed forces in the final push against the Tamil Tiger rebels last year.

Still, the event weathered the storm, as was evident at the ritzy grand finale, the highpoint of which was Hrithik Roshan's mindblowing livewire performance when he not only danced but wowed the audience by singing as well.

The other highlight was the compering by Lara Dutta along with Boman Irani-Riteish Deshmukh who once again enthralled the audience with their excellent chemistry on an extravagant set.

But then, there were the low points too - for instance, Bipasha Basu's performance on the awards night and the humid weather.

And, the threatened boycott by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce meant the glamour quotient on the final light was much lower than in the past, with it being left to the likes of Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Bipasha Basu to fly the Bollywood flag.

Nevertheless, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was ecstatic about hosting the awards ceremony in his country.

"Thank you IIFA for choosing my country as the venue for this extravagant event. It will help us in bridging the gap between the two nations in a simple manner," Rajapaksa said.

The grand finale apart, there was much more to the three-day event

On the first day, the IIFA Fashion Extravaganza saw the participation of many Bollywood actors and Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara, who walked the ramp for leading Indian and Sri Lankan designers. This was backed by a live musical performance by composers Salim-Suleiman and singers Kailash Kher and Anushka Manchanda.

A charity cricket match was organised the next day between the Sangakkara XI, boasting of some Sri Lankan greats and two teams comprising Bollywood stars and led respectively by Suniel Shetty and Hrithik Roshan. The former but naturally knocked out the Bollywood heroes.

The sixth edition of the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum, also on Friday, focused on various strategies to explore and boost business opportunities between India and Sri Lanka. The theme this year was "India - Sri Lanka Partnership: The Way forward", with some key speakers being President Rajapaksa and former Indian junior foreign minister Shashi Tharoor.

The first look of movies like 'Dabaang', 'Lamhaa' and 'Knockout' were also showcased at the event, as was a sneak peek into the multi-million project Kingdom of Dreams - a mega entertainment destination slated to open in Gurgaon ahead of the Commonwealth Games in October.

Even Hrithik's grandfather J Om Prakash was at IIFA

The Bachchan clan was sorely missed at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Sri Lanka but the Roshan family seemed to make up for their absence as Hrithik's filmmaker grandfather J. Om Prakash too walked in to receive a special award.

So the entire family - Hrithik, his wife Suzanne Roshan, father Rakesh Roshan, mother Pinky, sister Sunaina along with her husband, and maternal grandparents - attended the glitzy ceremony.

The reason for this togetherness was that Om Prakash, who has made films like 'Aap Ki Kasam' (1974), 'Aasha' (1980) and 'Aas Paas' (1981), was honoured for his outstanding contribution to cinema. And the award was presented to him by grandson Hrithik.

Getting nostalgic, Om Prakash said that the biggest achievement for him is that people now know him as Hrithik's 'naana' (maternal grandfather).

"I am fully content with what I have achieved and I feel that I have accomplished everything now. My life is complete. But the biggest achievement for me today is that I am recognised as Duggu's (Hrithik's nickname) grandfather," Om Prakash said at the award ceremony.

Vivek Oberoi, who hopes to build schools for orphans and underprivileged children in Sri Lanka, visited the Vavuniya district in the north region to understand the needs of Tamil people there.

"The Oberoi family is off to Vavuniya to spend the day understanding the needs of the Tamil people and to take our first major step towards Project Hope ... identifying a place to build our school for the orphaned and underprivileged children. We need your prayers and support," Vivek posted on his Twitter page along with a family photograph.

As part of Project Hope, the actor wants to build schools to rehabilitate Tamil children in war-affected regions. He was in the country to attend the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards that concluded on June 5.

“You have to respect the fact that people have work for which they sometimes cannot turn up at events. It happens to each one of us. I know everyone wanted to see the Bachchan family in Colombo. They are being missed by the people of Sri Lanka as well as by everyone of us. Abhishek and Aishwarya have a film up for release and, trust me, there is a lot of work and stress during a release (of Raavan). So, give them a respite. I’m sure they would be missing being here too.”

So, what prompted Vivek to go ahead and take such a strong stance for someone who has always cold shouldered him? People may call it a gimmick or a bold publicity stint (and it may very well be so) but more than that the likelihood points towards the theorem that he’s desperate to regain a warm cordial relationship with the biggies like Ash or Salman.

He has been trying to leave no stone unturned to salvage something out of his sinking career and, while I am typing this article out, he must be hoping that the Bachchan brigade do acknowledge and appreciate his gestures.

Thirteen-year-old Arawinda Perera kept screaming the name of Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan till the actor faded away from his sight.

This is not an unusual scene these days at the entrance to the plush Cinnamon Grand Hotel that is housing Bollywood celebrities who are in the city to participate in the three-day International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards extravaganza that will conclude on Saturday.

Like Perera, many Sri Lankan's are flocking around the hotel. As soon as they get sight of a luxurious and expensive car or a sedan, they queue up in enthusiasm and wait with baited breath for a celebrity to emerge from it.

"We love you Hrithik!" a group of young girls cried out loudly, as soon as they saw the actor coming out of his car and making his way to the hotel.

"We just love Bollywood. You can say we are crazy about it. Not just that, IIFA is such a big event and my country hosting it in itself is a proud moment," said Khadiyah Yoonus, a 14-year-old girl.

"I love him(Hrithik). He is just way too handsome and dashing. I saw him at the charity match. When will he come out?," asked little Khadiyah.

Khadiyah's elder sister Raeesah Yoonus was happy because she had manged to get an autograph from TV actor Ronit Roy.

"I am here because I want to see Hrithik, Kareena and Saif. What about Katrina Kaif? Is she here?," questioned Raeesah. "I can come here again in the evening if you confirm that they will come out so that we can see them," she added.

It's not just the kids who are pushing and shoving to get a glimpse of Bollywood celebrities. Even middle-aged women and some parents along with their kids flock the venue.

"I am here for Salman Khan. He is so cute. I am also fond of Indian movies. It is because I am an Indian and now I live here. But the charm of Bollywood is such that age doesn't matter," quipped Jyoti Tezwani, a woman in her 50's.

Tezwani was accompanied by her friend Riya Lalwani, who missed the presence of Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan at the IIFA awards.

"I really wish Shah Rukh had made it to IIFA this time. Also, we heard that Amitabh Bachchan is coming. He is the brand ambassador of IIFA, so we are just hoping that he comes here. We will try to get his glimpse only," said Lalwani.

Xurayk Walfir, a student, came along with her parents in the mad rush and waited patiently to meet any actor.

"I don't have any personal favourites. I love anyone, just everyone. I am basically from the Maldives and have shifted to Sri Lanka just three years back. Even the Maldives people are big Bollywood fans and we are just no exception," smiled Walfir.

"I am lucky enough to get a glimpse of these stars. I am so happy," she added.

Dresses, train gowns, saris and black suits ruled the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony in Colombo. Just like previous years, most of the Bollywood beauties stuck to gowns and dresses while men chose to play it safe with black.

But there were some leading ladies who opted for the elegant sari. Among them was Bipasha Basu who had combined a rustic orange sari with a fuschia halter neck blouse - a creation by designer Anamika Khanna.

Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez also draped a white sari with lots of crystals by designer Manav Gangwani while upcoming actress Sonakshi Sinha walked the green carpet in a golden sari.

Actresses like Lara Dutta, Dia Mirza, Malaika Arora Khan and Suzanne Khan wore long dresses. While Lara and Dia, both former Miss Indias, preferred the colours beige and black respectively, Malaika looked stunning in lime green and Suzanne shone in electric blue.

TV anchor Mandira Bedi and Sophie Chaudhary drew considerable attention with their rather revealing dresses.

Mandira wore a light blue, knee-length dress that was transparent enough to expose her tattoos. Sophie chose to wear a bold black dress in sheer transparent fabric by Manav Gangwani.

The Bollywood heroes stuck to the all-time favourite black. Everyone from Hrithik Roshan to Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor to Sanjay Dutt, Govinda to Vivek Oberoi and Neil Nitin Mukesh were all wearing formal black suits.

Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Jacqueline Fernandez, will perform on the last day of the IIFA Weekend which raised the curtain on its second decade of celebrations in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The IIFA Weekend, 2010, will showcase the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza, FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum, IIFA Foundation Celebrity Cricket Match, IIFA Film Workshops and the IIFA Awards.

Day one of the IIFA Weekend began with the IIFA Global Press Conference. The first night of the Weekend will see the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza which, with Indian and Sri Lankan fashion designers showcasing their collections.

The IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza will be spread over two days. The Foundation is a charity organization set up by the IIFA’s to support families of the film industry workers who have been adversely affected during the production of films. This year, the fashion extravaganza, IIFA Rocks will feature Indian designers Manish Malhotra and Vikram Phadnis and Sri Lankan designers Yoland and Kanchana (KT Brown).

Day two kicks off with the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum presented by Environmental Resources Investment (ERI). The Forum will be inaugurated by the president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The morning session of Day two consists of an IIFA Film Workshop, held for aspiring students in film related studies. An expert panel from the Indian Film Industry with speakers like director R. Balki, actor Anupam Kher and Jacqueline Fernandez will share their experiences with the students. The second part to the IIFA Film Workshop is a networking session amongst distinguished personalities from the Indian and Sri Lankan Film Industries. This interactive session will include topics based on direction, film making, cost effective co-productions etc.

The second night of the IIFA Foundation Fashion Extravaganza – IIFA Bling will feature celebrity showcases by designers, Rocky S and Nandita Mahtani. Also for the first time ever, the world will get to see a sneak preview of Kingdom of Dreams wherein Hussain Kuwajerwalla, Isha Shravani and Gauhar Khan will perform a piece from the soon-to-be launched theatre production, which premieres on stage in Gurgaon later this year.

Amitabh Bachchan may be conspicuously missing from the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend in Sri Lanka, but Salman Khan is surely hogging the limelight at the event which has faced calls of boycott from South Indian film industry and Tamil community in particular.

At the IIFA Fashion extravaganza event, Salman walked the ramp in his new moustachioed look from his upcoming film Dabangg. The star was in his elements and added a lot of oomph to the event with his charm and attitude.

Bipasha Basu, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kapoor also walked the ramp in the look from their film Lamhaa which is based in Kashmir.

The opening day of IIFA saw Indian designers Vikram Phadnis and Manish Malhotra presenting their new collections. From Sri Lanka, designers Yoland and Kanchana also showcased their creations.

Malaika Arora was the show stopper for Vikram Phadnis, while Jacqueline Fernandez sashayed the ramp for both Manish Malhotra and Yoland.

All in all, a glitzy first day for IIFA.

Mandira Bedi still 'Shanti' for Sri Lankans

Mandira Bedi, who became popular after playing the title role in the 1990s' TV serial Shanti, says she is still remembered by the character's name in Sri Lanka.

"Have been to Sri Lanka more than 40 times over the last 10 years. The people are so hospitable and incredibly warm. They still call me Shanti," Mandira, who is currently in Colombo for the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"(On) my first visit here, thousands of people lined the streets to see me. I got more love here in the 'Shanti' days than I got at home... Nostalgic to be back to the beautiful island with beautiful people," she wrote.

Actress Dia Mirza says Indian Premier League (IPL) has changed the whole definition of cricket by mixing glamour and fun.

'Before IPL, cricket wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but today everyone is talking about the IPL,' said Dia while speaking at the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum here Friday.

Speaking on the topic 'India, Sri Lanka and the Future of 'Cricketainment' ', the actress added: 'Today, IPL is equal to 'cricketainment', which means that is is a mix of glamour and fun. IPL has changed the whole meaning of cricket by making it more fun.'

'IPL has been able to mix sports and entertainment in such a way that it is no more a male domain and every member of a family is taking keen interest in the game.'

Dia also added that sport, arts and entertainment are three such mediums that connect people from diverse backgrounds, strengthen relationships and build bonds.

'In Bollywood, you have examples of movies like 'Chak De! India' and 'Lagaan' that were sports oriented and they were huge success - theatres were jam-packed. It clearly shows that sports is an integral part of cinema.'

This year the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony is being hosted by Sri Lankan capital, but back home the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) was not happy and said it would boycott all Bollywood stars who attend the event in Colombo.

The SIFCC wanted the venue to be shifted out of Sri Lanka following allegations of a genocide against Sri Lankan Tamils during the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and continuing discrimination against them.

But despite opposition, a bevy of Bollywood stars - among them Salman Khan, Lara Dutta, Bipasha Basu and Anupam Kher - have come to attend the function.

'IIFA is doing a great job by organising such initiatives that are helping two different nations to built the bridges,' said Dia.

Sri Lanka invites Indian investment

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday urged the Indian business community to explore abundant opportunities in infrastructure, agri-business and services sectors in the post-conflict era.

Addressing the Business Forum organised jointly by the Indian and Sri Lankan Chambers of Commerce here to coincide with the IIFA Awards Weekend, Mr. Rajapaksa said that the new areas and sectors have opened out since the end of the conflict in May last year and local and foreign investors would find them attractive and interesting.

He maintained that the policies of his Government were vibrant and package was enticing and exciting and the Indian business community would do well in the forward march.

He told the delegates gathered on the occasion that his Government strongly believed that to bring permanent peace there must be development. “As I have often said, there is no peace without development, and no development without peace.”

Mr. Rajapaksa claimed that the world business community was now slowly but surely, acknowledging and appreciating Sri Lanka's major successes in the economic sphere, though not much reported in the media.

On Indo-Lanka ties he said that the relationship between Sri Lanka and India had been anchored in a rich heritage and was irreversible. “We are now adding new spice to our relations with India and the world, with new and varied business opportunities”.

Mr. Rajapaksa told the Forum that while military success of the Sri Lankan forces was globally well-known, what might not be as well-known to the world were the major economic successes that Sri Lanka had also recorded, over the past four years.

In support of his contention Mr. Rajapaksa said that during the four years 2005-08, Sri Lanka achieved growth rates of over 6 per cent each year and inflation was brought down from over 22 per cent in 2008 to below 4 per cent by 2009.

Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Ashok K. Kantha in his remarks said that unburdened by the distractions of war, Sri Lanka could now expect to unleash its full potential and work actively towards encashing the peace dividend.

In the India-Sri Lanka context, these developments allow us the possibility to further strengthen and deepen our bonds of friendship and to develop a more intensive and mutually rewarding partnership. “Such a partnership should logically build on the successes that have been achieved in our upgraded economic ties over the last decade”, he said.

Mr. Kantha further said that what was required was a new vision for India-Sri Lanka economic engagement where the two governments should play the role of facilitators strengthening the existing mechanisms and create new ones that provide the necessary framework for a closer economic partnership.

The High Commissioner said that the great potential for growth through bilateral cooperation was tourism and India had emerged as the largest source of tourist arrivals into Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is hosting International India Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony and President Mahinda Rajapaksa says the event will spurt tourism in the country that fought a long war against the Tamil Tigers.

‘Thank you IIFA for choosing my country as the venue for this extravagant event. It will help us in bridging the gap between the two nations in a simple manner,’ Rajapaksa told delegates at the inaugural session of the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum here Friday.

‘There is no peace without development and hence as a nation we are trying to provide support to people who have been subjected to various tortures by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and this is one such way of telling the world that we have arrived,’ he added.

Rajapaksa also said that the two nations – India and Sri Lanka – have a rich and common cultural heritage and history and that they are trying to strengthen this bond.

‘Peace and stability – this is what I want for my country. And I want to tell the world that we have had major economic success in the past four years and we have improved considerably in terms of infrastructure, roads and airports,’ he said.

Rajapaksa’s statement has come at a time when the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce stated that southern stars and filmmakers would boycott all Bollywood stars who attend the IIFA event in the Sri Lankan capital.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the FICC IIFA Global Business Forum at the Colombo Hilton today.

This is the 11th edition of the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum which defines the economic and intellectual component of the annual IIFA Weekend. The Forum will engage CEOs and business decision makers in a stimulating dialogue on diverse aspects of Sri Lanka’s bilateral relationship with India. Speaking at the opening press conference of IIFA Weekend, Wizcraft International Director Sabbas Joseph said over 60 Indian corporates will participate in today’s FICC IIFA Global Business Forum.

Over 300 local corporate leaders representing different industries will participate in the FICC IIFA global Business Forum.

The Indian business delegation will be led by the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group Chairperson and Managing Director Jyotsna Suri. The theme of this year’s forum will be India-Sri Lanka Partnership - The Way Forward.

Star Plus will air the 11th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) in July this year. Once the event is showcased on the official broadcaster, Wizcraft plans to take the show to 110 other countries to introduce more audiences to the event globally.

Says Wizcraft executive producer Wiz Viraf Sarkari, “Bollywood is not just an extravaganza in India. It has a huge fan following globally too especially in South Africa, Pakistan and southeast Asia. And we are gearing up to tap these markets with IIFA.”

Post the airing of IIFA on the Star Network, the event will be aired across the Sri Lanka National Network and then travel to other corners of the world including US, UK, South Africa and Hong Kong.

Says Sarkari, "We are looking at showcasing the event across eight to 10 other terrestrial channels that fall outside the Star Network."

Sarkari informs that approximately 10-12 associate sponsors have come on board and the inventories are already full. "We have not done any separate deal for the airtime slots. It was a bulk deal done wherein sponsors who came on board also got airtime slots as part of the deal. Thus, the deal included both online and offline partnerships," he said.

Micromax is the title sponsor of the IIFA Awards while Videocon is the official sponsor of the IIFA Weekend event.

The IIFA is being hosted by the Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). Panasonic will continue backing the Greening of the IIFAs and Sri Lankan Airlines is the official airlines partner. Sri Lanka extended a warm welcome to the Indian movie stars arrived in the country defying the pressure from Tamil protestors in India to participate in the 11th International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) commenced in Colombo today.

Several Bollywood stars including Vivek Oberoi, Lara Datta, Sophie Chaudhary, Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Ritesh Deshmukh, Dia Mizra and Hrithik Roshan arrived in the country despite a call from the Tamil groups to boycott the event.

Issuing a congratulatory message, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the event is of special significance to Sri Lanka and it was only possible to hold such an international event in Sri Lanka due to the peaceful atmosphere in the country.

Welcoming the Indian stars, Sri Lanka's cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara praised the actors' courage to attend the event in Sri Lanka.

Sangakkara is teaming up with other Sri Lankan cricketers and Indian movie stars Hrithik Roshan and Suniel Shetty to play a charity cricket match on the 4th of June for the benefit of the former child soldiers.

Sri Lanka police and armed forces have implemented special security measures to provide security to the attendees.

Special police and security personnel manned the main road from the airport to Colombo and the guests were escorted by a security vehicle.

Several roads in the vicinity of the places in the capital where the events are to be held are closed for public and public are advised to avoid those areas.

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has spent Rs 75 million to give a complete facelift to the City for the awards ceremony which is to be held at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

The city's hotels are well prepared to host the celebrity guests attending the award ceremony and the other events associated with it that includes a business forum, a fashion show, and a celebrity cricket match between Bollywood stars and Sri Lankan cricketers.

The cast members of a controversial Indian movie on Kashmir said they will not let politics get in the way of their art, whether its politics in India or Sri Lanka.

Lamhaa is a film set in troubled Kashmir where a military investigator, played by Sanjay Dutt, investigates a blast in an unlikely partnership with a young, female Muslim leader, played by Bipasha Basu. In the process they learn about, “the corrupt nexus of politicians, intelligence, militancy and the crucifixion of idealistic and passionate people,” according to the movie’s press release.

The film had to overcome local opposition as it was being shot. Its director, Rahul Dholakia, had to meet with local leaders in Kashmir to explain the story. Today the cast are facing pressure from the other side of the country to avoid promoting it at the International Film Academy event being held in Colombo, Sri Lanka this week.

To show their anger at the way Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority has been treated by the government, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce and other groups have pledged to avoid the films of any actor or director that shows up at the event here.

The cast meembers of Lamhaa said from a stage in Colombo that some groups didn’t want their film to be made in the first place but they pushed forward despite the opposition.

“We are here to celebrate cinema and cinema sees no religion, no culture,” said Bipasha Basu, who plays Aziza in the movie. “We are here to spread the message of entertainment.”

Films that enlighten and educate can be used to calm tensions in places like Sri Lanka and Kashmir, they said.

“We are a family of mixed religions,” said Mr. Dutt, who plays Vikram in the film. “The film industry gets people together.”

Bollywood actor Salman Khan says boycotting the Indian International Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Colombo is not the right thing to do. Khan is in Colombo to make up for the depletion in star power at the event being held from today to June 5.

Protests over the Tamil issue may have kept some of Bollywood's biggest names away from the India International Film Academy (IIFA) awards this year. NDTV managed to catch Salman and ask him about the controversy.

Salman said, "I don't really understand this. If there are some people here who are not doing well and are in trouble then we have come to entertain them. We are here to give them something.

He further said, "This way we won't be able to visit Kashmir, Gujarat or Afghanistan. If our people are in difficulty we should not abandon them."

Sri Lanka as a venue for IIFA has angered many Tamil supporters in India, who allege the Sri Lankan government of killing Tamils civilians at the height of the conflict between army and LTTE last year. A group of Tamils had marched from superstar Amitabh Bachchan's Pratiksha bungalow to his Jalsa residence in Mumbai last month urging him to boycott the Colombo awards ceremony.

Vivek Oberoi to promote Sri Lanka

Indian actor Vivek Oberoi, who is in Sri Lanka for the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA), said that he will be embarking on several projects in the island to promote tourism and also help children affected by the conflict in the north.

The actor, in a short interview to Daily Mirror online, also praised Sri Lanka and its people including the women saying they are beautiful and makes him feel thankful to God to be single.

IIFA awards fete to go on despite protests

Sri Lanka is all set for the 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards festival, scheduled from June 3 to 5, despite calls for boycott by a section of the South Indian film industry.

Being held for the first time in the island nation, it is seen as a grand opportunity by the government to showcase the post-conflict Sri Lanka as an ideal tourist and investment destination.

The government is going out of its way to make the event a big success, though it remains to be seen whether some of the big names expected to participate in the extravaganza would actually make it.

On Tuesday, Hindi film actors Vivek Oberoi, Boman Irani, Lara Dutta and Ritesh Deshmukh arrived here to participate in the IIFA events. According to the Tourism Board officials, some more leading Hindi film actors and music artistes are to arrive on Wednesday and Thursday, along with hundreds of Indian tourists.

The stated objective of IIFA is to help “bridge boundaries” between the neighbouring countries and promote discussions on economic and political issues in the wake of Sri Lanka's civil war last May.

IIFA brand ambassador and veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan was here in April to mark the official launch. The actor had called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa. On his return to India, Mr. Bachchan faced criticism from a section of the Tamil diaspora for his decision to participate in the IIFA.

For several weeks now, there have been demands by activists to boycott the Colombo event. However, last week the event's organisers put an end to all speculation by categorically asserting that there was no change in the decision to host the event in Sri Lanka.

A senior government official said the protests by a small minority were politically motivated and intended to undermine the victory of the security forces against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and efforts of the government to market Sri Lanka as a safe and ideal destination for tourism and investment.

“There is a lot of protest from the [Tamil] Tiger lobby in Tamil Nadu to the Bollywood [Hindi film] fraternity to boycott the IIFA Colombo awards. But we will go ahead with the event as planned,” Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene told a news conference here.

The awards ceremony will have several sideline forums to strengthen business and investment links between the two countries.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) will hold the FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum 2010, here on Friday.

According to the organisers, the Business Forum is the highlight of the IIFA weekend, as it provides Indian and Sri Lankan business leaders with a mutually beneficial networking opportunity. The objective is to promote bilateral trade between India and the host country, said Convention Bureau Consultant Nimalka Morahela.

Speakers at the forum will include Indians like Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Tourism Union Minister Kumari Selja, Hospitality Group Chairperson Lalit Suri and Managing Director Jyotsna Suri, Western Union Services India Director Marketing Rajesh Mehta and FICCI Co-Chairman Tourism Himmat Anand.

Technical and ground rehearsals for IIFA begin tomorrow

Sugathadasa stadium has become a brand new venue with IIFA. Two world class giant stadium chillers imported from America and Singapore installed at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium where the 11th International Indian Film (IIFA) awards will take place.

The IIFA awards ceremony will comprise high lighting. The prevailing air-conditioning capacity is 24 degrees and it should be reduced to 20 degrees and maintained for about five hours during the event.

According to the Events Coordinator and IIFA Logistics Manager Amesh Panawala the two chillers could supply required air-conditioning capacity.

He also said that 85 percent of the work is complete and the finishing touches are being put to the setup. The stage, the green carpet platform, marquees and media risers have been set up.

Approximately seven cameras will be installed while LED screens of all types have been imported from India and Germany and installed. Technical and ground rehearsals will begin tomorrow (02).

Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said all the measures to ensure security arrangements have been take to stage the Videocon IIFA Weekend and Micromax IIFA Awards.

According to MCNS some roads leading to the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium will be closed for a short period during the day of the main event to see that the Indian artistes and other delegates will have no problems reaching the venue. Special security forces have been allocated for the project. The security in the city will be of high standard.

Mandira Bedi, Chunky Pandey and Javed Jaffrey will host UNICEF’s ‘Cricket for Children’ charity cricket match at the Sinhalese Sports Club on June 4. Playing for the IIFA XI are Salman Khan, Dino Morea, Vinod Kambli, Kiran More and others while Sri Lankan cricketers Sanath Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardena and others will support the cause.

IIFA XI team Captain Hrithik Roshan said he is looking forward to putting his best efforts to support ‘Cricket for Children’ and IIFA Hands for Humanity. The funds of the event will be donated to build the IIFA model village in Kilinochchi. Former child-soldiers will also be rehabilitated and educated.

“It’s one of the biggest events Sri Lanka has seen to date. I have quite a few roles to play at the IIFA this year,” Jacqueline said in an interview.

“This is just not any award function for me because I am a Sri Lankan and everyone from the film fraternity is actually coming to Sri Lanka; so for me it’s like a chance to welcome the people who have welcomed me so warmly,” added the actress, who made her Bollywood debut with Aladin.

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards are being held in Colombo June 3-June 5 against a backdrop of massive protests from Tamils in India, who allege that members of the community continue to be discriminated in Sri Lankaand allege genocide against Sri Lankan Tamils during the war against the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam).

Film associations from southern Indiahave also decided to boycott any actor who participates in the IIFA event this year.

“It’s sad, you know. It is a very critical moment for Sri Lanka. We are really hoping for support and cooperation from every one. We are in a new era. The war ended last year and we are trying to make our country as peaceful as possible to retain the peace. Some people want to ruin that. They should see the bigger picture and move on,” said Jacqueline, a former Miss Sri Lanka.

She is quite familiar with the Hindi film industry. In 2009, she started her acting career with director Sujoy Ghosh’s fantasy film Aladin in which she teamed up with Bollywood megastar and IIFA brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan as well as Sanjay Dutt and Riteish Deshmukh. She also played the lead role in romantic comedy Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai.

Jacqueline will not only welcome Bollywood stars but will also participate in the fashion extravaganza at the event.

“I will be the showstopper for a local designer Yoland and will be walking the ramp for (Hindi film industry’s most sought after designer) Manish Malhotra,” Jacqueline said.

Talking about the outfits she will showcase, she said: “It’s not traditional Sri Lankan outfit, it’s more of fusion. She (Yoland) has designed lots of saris and kaftans. She makes a fusion of what she gets because she is very well-known international designer.”

The 25-year-old will also perform at the main awards function, but not on any Bollywood numbers.

“Actually, this year it’s going to be very different for me. I am not going to perform on any songs from my films. I am going to perform with a Sri Lankan dance troupe. Being a Sri Lankan, I want to do the opening numbers, I want to do the welcome number and want to perform with Sri Lankan dancers,” said Jacqueline.

Jacqueline, however, won’t participate in the charity cricket match to be played between Bollywood celebrities and Sri Lankan cricketers to help rehabilitate former Tamil Tiger child soldiers.

“I am only there to support. I will support (Sri Lanka cricket captain) Kumar Sangakkara. He is a buddy and I will support his team,” she said.

Brushing aside uncertainty over some top Indian film stars including Amitabh Bachchan not participating in the forthcoming IIFA awards here, Sri Lankan government today said majority of them have confirmed their participation.

"Some small group in Tamil Nadu is bringing pressure on some stars dissuading them from attending the International Indian Film Academy Awards function," Deputy Minister for Economic Development Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, who is associated with the event, told reporters.

"About 97% of the top stars have confirmed with the exception of Amitabh Bachchan and his family," he said without giving further details.

It is still uncertain whether the 67-year-old megastar, who is the Brand Ambassador of IIFA, will attend the award ceremony or not. His son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will not be attending as they are busy promoting their film Raavan.

The film's director Mani Ratnam as well as actor Kamal Haasan have decided not to attend. Actors Shah Rukh Khan and Arjun Rampal are also giving it a miss citing prior work commitments.

The three day IIFA event beginning June 3 will also include a business forum, fashion show and a charity cricket match involving Indian and Sri Lankan movie and cricket stars such as Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Hrithik Roshan and Sri Lankan cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the International Indian Film Awards Joseph Sabhash said the event will lead to massive development in Sri Lanka.

The country will be able to enhance its multi national relationships through this festival, he told the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation. It will also pave the way for more foreign investment in the island.

IIFA business forum will be declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the festival, the SLBC reported adding this will help enhance trade ties between Sri Lanka and India.

Members of the Tamil community staged a protest here on Sunday against Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s proposed visit to Sri Lanka for International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony.

Khan is due to attend the 11th IIFA awards ceremony in Colombo from June 3-5.

“We tried to give him a letter which he did not accept and said that he will attend the award function, so we have burnt photographs here. In case if they attend this function we won’t let his films to release here,” said Sharvana, a protestor.

The IIFA 2010 is being viewed in Sri Lanka as a ‘coming out’ platform for a nation that is emerging from 30 years of civil war.

The Tamil film fraternity has also rejected the idea of an Indian film event in Sri Lanka, with popular Tamil actors Rajnikanth, Kamal Hassan, Vijay, Ajith and Surya reportedly declining to take part in the IIFA.

Ace Sri Lankan cricketers Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya believe that IIFA Awards 2010, to be held in Colombo, is a “big opportunity” to promote Sri Lanka in Bollywood and foster a better relationship between the two countries.

“It’s a big opportunity to promote Sri Lanka among the film fraternity here. Sri Lankans are very big fans of Bollywood and the film industry is very popular in Sri Lanka,” Sanath Jayasuriya told IANS in an exclusive interview.

“Sri Lankans are looking forward to this big event. It’s nice for our country and good for the relations between the two ountries,” he added.

Kumar Sangakkara, captain of both the Sri Lankan cricket team and actress Preity Zinta’s Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, agrees that Bollywood has a huge presence in Sri Lanka.

“Bollywood is a great hit in Sri Lanka and all over the world. I think everyone in the world has sat up and taken notice of how big Bollywood is, how attractive it is and how talented the stars are,” Sangakkara said.

He will reprise his role of a captain in charity cricket matches in Colombo between Indian celebrities and Sri Lankan cricketers, to be organised by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) to help rehabilitate former Tamil Tiger child soldiers.

“It will be lot of fun and lot of entertainment. It is also a very touching humanitarian cause as a village for 100 families will be built. Entertainment tied with IIFA humanity project and also Cricket for Children where child soldiers will be re-educated, rehabilitated and given a better way of life, is a great initiative,” Sangakkara said.

The wicket keeper and left-handed batsman said he was a big Bollywood movie buff.

“The first Hindi movie I watched was ‘Bombay’. Then I saw ‘Laagan’ and have watched others like ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and ‘Water’. I like quite a few and the messages the films carry are very relevant and touching,” Sangakkara said.

While all-rounder cricketer Jayasuriya likes Shah Rukh Khan movies, Sangakkara likes all the Khans, appreciates Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah’s work and was all praise for Bollywood actresses.

“I have seen few Shah Rukh Khan films. On the local channels, Hindi movies are shown always. Sometimes we watch them even when we don’t know the movie name. I like Shah Rukh Khan movies and never miss them,” Jayasuriya said.

Sangakkara said: “I like Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman. I have seen Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah in various roles. And there are some most talented and beautiful ladies of the world in Bollywood.”

Asked whom they would like to see performing at the IIFA Awards, Jayasuriya quipped: “I would always like to see Aishwarya Rai performing on stage.”

Sangakkara had “no particular favourite”.

“I would like to see all the actresses who would come to Sri Lanka. If they do perform on stage, it will be an added attraction,” he said.

Tamils from India hugely protested against IIFA Awards being held in Sri Lanka following allegations of a genocide against Sri Lankan Tamils during the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and continuing discrimination against them.

The South Indian film associations have decided to boycott any actor who participates in the awards ceremony in Sri Lanka.

Asked about their take on it, Jayasuriya said: “I want the entire Bollywood to come to Sri Lanka. You are all welcome to our country and we will look after you with great care. It’s between Sri Lanka and India. We share a very good relationship and we want to strengthen it further.”

The city hotels have taken an additional step to release several members of staff to work on a voluntary basis to assist in the vast and varied arrangements.   “IIFA was planned in a short time and the City Hotels will provide 650 room nights per day including 148 suites on complementary basis.

The rooms will be on a bed and breakfast basis and the suites will be on a full board basis with extras,” said M. Shanthikumar, President of Colombo City Tourist Hotels Association (CCTHA).

IIFA not bowing to pressure

There is no change in the venue of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards, which will be held in Colombo June 3-5, the organisers said Saturday, refuting reports of pressure from the Tamil film lobby to shift the event out of the Sri Lankan capital.

"We are not under any pressure. There is no change in the venue and we are going ahead with the schedule," Sabas Joseph, one of the directors of Wizcraft that organises the gala, told IANS.

"If Indian cricketers can play in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan players can come to India to play T20 matches, why can't we go there? It is just another way of bridging the gap," he said.

There were reports that the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce Association had threatened to boycott Bollywood stars who attend the IIFA programme.

According to the reports, they wanted the venue to be shifted out of Sri Lanka following allegations of a genocide against Sri Lankan Tamils during the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and continuing discrimination against them.

Director Mani Ratnam and actor Arjun Rampal have, meanwhile, said that they won't be attending the Colombo event due to other professional commitments.

Thirteen containers will arrive today. All these will be used for the fashion show as well as the IIFA Awards,” he said.

The stage will be constructed in three layers. Hand painted regiform props designed by Indian craftsmen will adorn the stage while the green carpet will be rolled out for the stars and the VVIPs. The IIFA green carpet will also be aired live on the BBC for the first time in history.

“Sugathadasa was mainly used as a sports venue though it staged some entertainment shows. We have reduced the air conditioning capacity from 24 degrees to 20 degrees after installing extra chillers. President Mahinda Rajapaksa had monitored the progress carefully. The stadium will be given a brand new look after nearly 20 years,” Panawala noted.

IIFA an opportunity to showcase Sri Lanka

Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said hosting the 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards is not only a prestige to the country but it is an event which can have a positive effect in Sri Lanka’s development scheme as well.

“It is calculated that around 600 million viewers watch the event on television,” he said.

“More than 300 foreign media from over 110 countries will be present to cover the event. This will have a positive effect on the country’s image. Foreign countries especially from the west will realize that Sri Lanka is able to stage such a grand scale event without any problems,” he said.

According to Abeywardena, one reason Sri Lanka was chosen as the Micromax IIFA awards venue is due to the cultural similarities between Sri Lanka and India.

He said each year countries have to bid for the award ceremony to be staged in their country. In the past IIFAs have been celebrated in London, Sun City, Johannesburg, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Amsterdam, Yorkshire and Bangkok. IIFA celebrated its 10th anniversary in Macau last year. Sri Lanka was selected to host this year’s event out of around nine countries.

“This gives us an opportunity to show the world what Sri Lanka has to offer. Tourism is our most rapid developing sector. IIFA will add a boost to the sector. We are expecting a 50 percent increase of Indians who will visit this country next year due to the coverage that the island is getting through this event. It would have cost us around Rs. 4,625 million to launch a promotional campaign regarding the peaceful atmosphere and resources that Sri Lanka has to offer. With the IIFA Awards being staged in the country we can send across that message free,” he added.

Around 2,650 hotel rooms in Colombo have been booked for the event. Hotels from Colombo to Bentota will accompany visitors.

“Not only Colombo, but even other areas will benefit from the event. More than 300 Indian multi- millionaires will take part in the business forum. We are hoping to discuss with Habitat for Humanity on building 100 houses at the IIFA village in Kilinochchi. The fashion show and fund raising cricket match will bring more exposure so that we will gain more rather than the amount we spend,” Abeywardena noted. He said Rs. 1,700 million profit will be obtained through the high-profiled event that will unfold in the city from June 3 to 5.

Monitoring the progress of the new outlook of the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, he said the stadium will be revamped in such a manner so that it could be marketed to mega scale events in the future. Apart from the main venues, road development and airport decorations are also under way.

RAW in Sri Lanka To Provide Security To Indian Stars

According to government sources several Indian intelligence services including Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) have already arrived in Sri Lanka to make necessary security arrangements for cinema stars who would attend the IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) ceremony to be held from 3rd to 5th June.

A government spokesman said deploying Indian intelligence services in Sri Lanka Indian government expects to beef up security for the Indian stars.

Colombo city facelift continues for IIFA

Colombo Chief City Administrator Omar Kamil said despite the rain, work is continuing on giving a facelift to the Colombo city for the 11th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards.

Kamil told the Daily News that the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) had been called upon to beautify the environment and refurbish the roads.

Roads from the outer areas of the city leading to some of the main venues of the Videocon IIFA Weekend and Micromax IIFA Awards will be redeveloped, he said.

This includes the roads leading to the BMICH where the fashion extravaganza will take place, the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) where the T20 celebrity cricket match will be held on June 4 and the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium where the star-studded awards night will be held on June 5.

Road networks from Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake to hotels where the visitors will be residing will be improved. Additional lighting and landscaping are done. Around 70 percent of the groundwork is complete.

“The showers restricted our work to some extent. We had difficulties in exporting material from other areas but we have now solved the problem.

We are positive that we will be able to achieve our target on time,” Kamil noted.
